    Application of Phytohormones, Growth Regulators, and Calcium to Preserve Fruit Quality in Pre- and Post-Harvest

    The technological levels used to reduce fruit losses in post-harvest are closely linked to those used in pre-harvest. Applications of phytohormones, growth regulators, and calcium to fruit in pre- and post-harvest are viable alternatives to increase and preserve quality attributes. Knowledge of the action and response of fruits to the exogenous application of different phytohormones, growth regulators, and calcium in pre-harvest are fundamental when considering that fruit quality is acquired at this stage and that the purpose of post-harvest technology is to preserve fruit quality. This chapter describes research carried out to evaluate the response of different fruits to the application of phytohormones, phytoregulators, and calcium, which showed favorable responses in increasing fruit quality in pre-harvest and preserving quality in post-harvest

    In vitro activity of bedaquiline against rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria

    Bedaquiline (BDQ) has been proven to be effective in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. We hypothesized that BDQ could be a potential agent to treat nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of BDQ against rapidly growing mycobacteria by assessing the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) against 18 NTM strains. For MIC determination we performed the resazurin microtitre assay broth dilution, and for the MBC the c.f.u. was determined. BDQ exhibited a strong inhibitory effect against most NTM tested; however, for some NTM strains the MBC was significantly higher than the MIC. A new finding is that Mycobacterium flavescens has a mutation in the gene atpE associated with natural resistance to BDQ. These preliminary promising results demonstrate that BDQ could be potentially useful for the treatment of NTM

    The transcriptome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a lipid-rich dormancy model through RNAseq analysis

    Tuberculosis (TB) is currently the number one killer among infectious diseases worldwide. Lipids are abundant molecules during the infectious cycle of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and studies better mimicking its actual metabolic state during pathogenesis are needed. Though most studies have focused on the mycobacterial lipid metabolism under standard culture conditions, little is known about the transcriptome of Mtb in a lipid environment. Here we determined the transcriptome of Mtb H37Rv in a lipid-rich environment (cholesterol and fatty acid) under aerobic and hypoxic conditions, using RNAseq. Lipids significantly induced the expression of 368 genes. A main core lipid response was observed involving efflux systems, iron caption and sulfur reduction. In co-expression with ncRNAs and other genes discussed below, may act coordinately to prepare the machinery conferring drug tolerance and increasing a persistent population. Our findings could be useful to tag relevant pathways for the development of new drugs, vaccines and new strategies to control TB

    Inteligencia Artificial y la Educación Universitaria: Una revisión sistemática

    En la actualidad, el auge de las Inteligencias Artificiales (IA) ha implicado un cambio significativo en las metodologías de enseñanza dentro del ámbito de la educación universitaria. El objetivo principal de esta transformación es explorar y comprender el desarrollo y la implementación de las IA en el contexto de la educación universitaria, así como anticipar el enfoque futuro que representará el uso de estas tecnologías emergentes en los procesos pedagógicos para obtener una comprensión más clara y precisa del contexto actual, se implementó una metodología sistemática y rigurosa para la revisión de artículos académicos y documentos científicos que contribuyan con la investigación, se realizó un análisis en bases de datos como Scielo, Scopus y SpringerLink, los cuales fueron filtrados a través de criterios que debían cumplir para ser considerados aptos en el estudio. Como resultado de este esfuerzo analítico, se obtuvieron 29 investigaciones referentes a la importancia y aplicación de la IA en el entorno universitario, estas investigaciones revelaron una tendencia creciente y significativa en la educación, centrada en la implementación de herramientas tecnológicas avanzadas que se enfocan en proporcionar una enseñanza más personalizada y eficiente, estas herramientas, diseñadas para facilitar el desarrollo de actividades más intuitivas, contribuyen a la comprensión y absorción del conocimiento por parte de los estudiantes, facilitando también la adaptación a diversos estilos de aprendizaje, permitiendo una experiencia educativa más enriquecedora y ajustada a las necesidades individuales de cada alumno. Como conclusión, se destaca que el adecuado y responsable uso de la inteligencia artificial en la educación universitaria tiene el potencial no solo de enriquecer los procesos de aprendizaje, sino también de mejorar la eficiencia institucional, además, abre caminos para desarrollar métodos pedagógicos más eficaces y responder de manera más ágil a los desafíos educativos contemporáneo

    Sleep matters: Neurodegeneration spectrum heterogeneity, combustion and friction ultrafine particles, industrial nanoparticle pollution, and sleep disorders—Denial is not an option

    Sustained exposures to ubiquitous outdoor/indoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5), including combustion and friction ultrafine PM (UFPM) and industrial nanoparticles (NPs) starting in utero, are linked to early pediatric and young adulthood aberrant neural protein accumulation, including hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau), beta-amyloid (Aβ1 − 42), α-synuclein (α syn) and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43), hallmarks of Alzheimer's (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). UFPM from anthropogenic and natural sources and NPs enter the brain through the nasal/olfactory pathway, lung, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, skin, and placental barriers. On a global scale, the most important sources of outdoor UFPM are motor traffic emissions. This study focuses on the neuropathology heterogeneity and overlap of AD, PD, FTLD, and ALS in older adults, their similarities with the neuropathology of young, highly exposed urbanites, and their strong link with sleep disorders. Critical information includes how this UFPM and NPs cross all biological barriers, interact with brain soluble proteins and key organelles, and result in the oxidative, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondrial stress, neuroinflammation, DNA damage, protein aggregation and misfolding, and faulty complex protein quality control. The brain toxicity of UFPM and NPs makes them powerful candidates for early development and progression of fatal common neurodegenerative diseases, all having sleep disturbances. A detailed residential history, proximity to high-traffic roads, occupational histories, exposures to high-emission sources (i.e., factories, burning pits, forest fires, and airports), indoor PM sources (tobacco, wood burning in winter, cooking fumes, and microplastics in house dust), and consumption of industrial NPs, along with neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric histories, are critical. Environmental pollution is a ubiquitous, early, and cumulative risk factor for neurodegeneration and sleep disorders. Prevention of deadly neurological diseases associated with air pollution should be a public health priority

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe

    Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV

    Measurement of the W gamma Production Cross Section in Proton-Proton Collisions at root s=13 TeV and Constraints on Effective Field Theory Coefficients

    A fiducial cross section for W gamma production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137 fb(-1) of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W -> e nu and mu nu decay modes are used in a maximum-likelihood fit to the lepton-photon invariant mass distribution to extract the combined cross section. The measured cross section is compared with theoretical expectations at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. In addition, 95% confidence level intervals are reported for anomalous triple-gauge couplings within the framework of effective field theory.Peer reviewe
